New BUP MOOC course- Sustainable Food Systems in the Baltic Sea Region

New BUP MOOC course- Sustainable Food Systems in the Baltic Sea Region

The BUP Coordinating Secretariat are happy to announce that we have published our second massive open online course (MOOC) on the BUP Course Platform. The course Sustainable Food Systems in the Baltic Sea Region is now available as a self-paced and free of charge course.

All courses on the BUP Course Platform are developed by colleagues at BUP participating universities who work in the BUP working model, which means to work in inter disciplinary and intercultural teams of co-operation. Colleagues contribute with their knowledge and experiences in developing the course materials. This way of working offers opportunities to learn from each other and different perspectives as well as different academic cultures.

Sustainable Food Systems in the Baltic Sea Region is an introductory course on the history, social, economic, and ecological aspects of food production in the Baltic Sea Region. The course also focuses on future challenges, such as food security and climate change.

The course consists of four parts:

  1. The history of agriculture in the Baltic Sea Region
  2. Ecological, economic and social aspects of food systems
  3. The challenges of sustainable food systems - now and tomorrow
  4. Examples from the region

The courses on the BUP Course Platform can be accessed independent of time and place, as full distance courses. Students and teachers are able to take a course whenever, as a self-paced learning course.

If you are interested in looking at or participating in a BUP MOOC-course visit the website for the BUP Course Platform.

There are further opportunities with the material developed for each MOOC course. For example, there is the option to develop more advanced courses, and to give student credits by adding material, assignments, seminars etc. These initiatives must then be taken at each BUP participating university. In this case we will also be able to promote virtual exchange co-operations between BUP participating universities when running credit bearing courses.

The BUP Symposium 2021

The date of the BUP Symposium 2021 is 19-20 October 2021.

The aim of the Symposium 2021 is to be a platform where the regional educational and research communities can get together and get to know each other better as colleagues at Participating Universities of The Baltic University Programme. It is an opportunity to disseminate recent research and learn about new knowledge. The Symposium is an arena where new discussions and collaborations can begin. We are challenging researchers from different disciplines with an interest in the Baltic Sea Region as an empirical field to discuss Sustainable Development in the Baltic Sea Region. We focus on research having an inter-/multi disciplinary approach.

Theme sessions are divided into nine BUP Themes: Climate Change, Renewable Energy, Sustainable Societies, Sustainable Water Resources, Urban-Rural Development, Bio- and Circular Economy, Sustainable Tourism, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Sustainable Food Systems, which is coordinated by Radovan Kasarda, Professor, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra, Slovakia and Madeleine Granvik, Associate Professor, Uppsala University, Sweden.
