Viva la science! The summer school of biology and biotechnology started today

According to the project coordinator Ing. Eva Tvrdá, PhD., from the Institute of Applied Biology, Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Science of the SUA, sixteen students from Slovak universities, as well as from the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine, enrolled in the summer school. During the next four weeks, there will be lectures and workshops where they will try out food technology, sensory, "detection" of falsified food, chocolate or beer production, but also seminars focused on academic writing and academic presentation. A significant part of the summer school will be laboratory activities, oriented towards genetics, cell cultures, analytical chemistry and other aspects of biology.

"This year we slightly changed the concept of the summer school, we also invited students from the V4 countries and Ukraine," informed Ing. Eva Tvrdá, PhD. "We realize that a very important part of a researcher's work is also cooperation, especially international cooperation," she emphasized.

Students also visited individual laboratories and chose a future project and a mentor based on their preferences. As the next step, they will start working in groups of two and three in the laboratories. "Thanks to the mixed teams, during the next month they will improve their English, they will learn laboratory activities - from sample preparation to analysis and data interpretation. At the end of the summer school, they will present the results of their projects in front of an expert committee. I believe they will gain real experience of knowledge about functioning laboratory life and they will understand that it is not like in the series, where the heroes come to the lab, press the buttons, the machines light up and they get results..." added the coordinator.
