The presidency was elected by the members of the association at the 32nd annual DAGENE international conference, which took place on March 23-24 at the Bábolna National Stud Farm in Hungary. Its goal was to look for the possibilities of real economic efficiency of genetic resources in the conditions of the member countries. In addition to the professional program, it also introduced selected farms with original domestic horse breeds and farms with regional specialties. Eight European countries were represented at the event - Slovakia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Ukraine.
DAGENE (Danubian Animal Genetic Resources) is an international association for the protection of original national breeds in the Danube region with headquarters in Budapest. It actively approaches the protection of native breeds and species and seeks solutions for their preservation in close cooperation with the FAO in Rome.
An important stud farm
There are only a few stud farms in the whole world that can boast of breeding thoroughbred Arabian horses for almost two centuries. Among them is the National Stud Farm in Bábolna, the history of which dates back to 1789. In 1836, it was possible to acquire the breeding stallion Sharya from Syria, which today has a statue in the central part of the park. According to him, Arabian horses from local breeding are registered under the name Sharya Arab and since 1988 represent an independent breeding line recognized by the World Organization of Arabian Horses.
