It recorded this success within the global ranking UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024, in which 1,476 universities from 95 countries of the world participated, which was 294 more than in 2023.
According to the published results, SUA in Nitra ranked 148th overall. This again surpassed its position from 2023, when it ranked 178th. “This progress reflects our systematic measures aimed at sustainability. Green roofs and green walls were created at the university, and an Environmental Center specialized in climate and landscape was built. We also actively participate in international Horizon Europe projects that focus on environmental sustainability. At the same time, we organize activities in which we involve not only the academic community, but also the wider public. According to the assessment, our strongest areas in the field of sustainability are water, waste management, education and research,” said engineer Hana Zach from the Office of the Internal Quality Assurance System of SUA.
The Slovak University of Agriculture has been participating in the UI GreenMetric assessment since 2018 and has defended its leadership among Slovak universities every year, while regularly achieving leading positions within the Visegrad Four (V4) countries. In the current assessment for 2024, SUA ranked 6th among the V4, where 39 universities were assessed. Other Slovak universities included in the ranking were the Catholic University of Ružomberok (1078th place), the Technical University of Košice (1304th place) and the University of Žilina (1315th place).
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is one of the most respected global rankings of university sustainability and is gaining popularity every year. While 1,182 universities from 84 countries were included in the ranking in 2023, in 2024 this number increased to 1,476 universities from 95 countries.
The university ranking is based on three pillars of sustainability – environmental, economic and social – and monitors performance through 39 indicators. These indicators assess various aspects such as infrastructure, energy and the fight against climate change, waste management, water sustainability, transport, as well as education and research in the field of sustainability. The ranking thus provides a comprehensive picture of universities' efforts to reduce their ecological footprint and promote development in accordance with the principles of sustainability.
