SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. |
Our Contribution to SDG 11
The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (SUA) contributes to sustainable cities and communities through research, landscape architecture, cultural activities, public access to university facilities and improvements to its built environment.
The university connects expertise in spatial planning, environmental management, architecture and regional development with campus operations and cooperation with municipalities and local communities.
Research and Innovation
SUA's research addresses landscape architecture, sustainable urban development, green infrastructure, climate adaptation and regional planning. Researchers contribute to the development of knowledge and practical approaches that support resilient and inclusive settlements.
In 2025, the university participated as an expert institution in preparing Slovakia's first Architectural Policy, which was adopted by the government in December. The policy provides a framework for high-quality built environments, landscape protection, cultural heritage and public participation.
Research and professional events, including architecture and habitat-related conferences, enable further exchange among scholars, planners, public authorities and practitioners.
Education and Student Engagement
SUA provides education in landscape architecture, regional development, environmental management and related disciplines. Students gain experience in planning and design through coursework, research, practical projects and engagement with external stakeholders.
University cultural activities and student organisations also contribute to community life. Students participate in creative, artistic and educational programmes that link campus experiences with the city and wider region.
Public Engagement and Community Activities
The university supports the cultural and social life of Nitra through accessible events, exhibitions, folklore performances and opportunities to visit selected university facilities.
In July 2025, SUA organised the 47th International Festival of Academic Folklore Ensembles, Akademická Nitra, celebrating intangible cultural heritage and international cultural exchange. The Botanical Garden provides public access under published visitor conditions, while the Slovak Agricultural Library offers services to registered users and other eligible visitors.
These facilities and activities connect the university's educational mission with community well-being and cultural participation.
Sustainable Campus Operations
SUA maintains and modernises its university buildings, student residences and public spaces with increasing attention to resource efficiency, accessibility and environmentally responsible design.
Campus measures include pedestrian routes, bicycle facilities, green areas and selected mobility alternatives. Renovation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings can improve energy performance while extending the service life of university infrastructure.
Digital systems support communication, collaboration and certain flexible working arrangements. Student accommodation and university facilities also provide essential services within the campus community, although access and charges vary by service.
