SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. |
Our Contribution to SDG 12
The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (SUA) promotes responsible consumption and production through research, education, waste-management practices, resource efficiency and cooperation with agricultural and industrial partners.
The university addresses sustainability challenges across food systems, materials management, laboratory operations and everyday campus activities. It combines innovation in production processes with practical measures intended to reduce environmental impacts.
Research and Innovation
Research at SUA covers sustainable food production, biotechnology, resource efficiency, circular-economy approaches and the recovery or reuse of materials. Research facilities support innovation that can reduce waste and improve the environmental performance of agricultural and food-sector processes.
Projects such as NENUPHAR examine nutrient pollution and the potential for nutrient recovery and recycling. Work involving food technologies, packaging and bio-based resources also contributes to the development of more sustainable production systems.
Cooperation with businesses helps transfer solutions from laboratories and demonstration facilities into practical use.
Education and Student Engagement
Responsible consumption and production are addressed through teaching in agriculture, food science, biotechnology, engineering, economics and environmental management. Students encounter topics such as waste prevention, sustainable processing, material cycles and environmentally responsible business practices.
Practical exercises and research projects connect these concepts with real production systems. Workshops, public events and campus sustainability activities encourage students to consider their consumption patterns and the environmental impacts of products and services.
Public Engagement and Community Activities
SUA shares expertise with producers, companies, farmers and the public through professional events, agricultural exhibitions and knowledge-transfer initiatives. The university supports discussion of circular-economy principles and innovations in responsible resource use.
Educational activities, including the Path to Sustainability workshop in 2025, addressed sustainable lifestyles, waste separation and opportunities for more responsible production and consumption. Public-facing innovation activities at the Food Incubator and AgroBioTech Research Centre provide additional opportunities to engage with sustainable food systems.
Sustainable Campus Operations
SUA operates an institutional waste-management system covering municipal, recyclable, organic and hazardous waste. Separate collection is supported by designated containers, including MOLOK semi-underground units, and cooperation with authorised waste-management providers.
Laboratory and other hazardous waste is identified and handled through controlled procedures. Special collection arrangements cover electrical equipment and batteries. University practices also include digital administration, electronic publications and measures intended to reduce consumption of paper, toners and disposable items.
For 2025, monitoring recorded reductions of approximately 37% in office paper purchases and 16% in toner purchases compared with 2024. A final institution-wide waste-generation total requires reconciliation of different source records before publication as a single verified figure.
Key Achievements
- 37% reduction in office paper purchases in 2025 compared with 2024.
- 16% reduction in toner purchases in 2025 compared with 2024.
- Separate collection of paper, plastic, glass, electronic waste and batteries across university operations.
- Established procedures for hazardous-waste handling and authorised disposal.
