SDG 2 – Zero Hunger

SDG 2 – Zero Hunger

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

Our Contribution to SDG 2

The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra contributes to food security, improved nutrition and sustainable agriculture through research, education, technology transfer and cooperation with farmers and food producers. These priorities are central to the university's educational and research mission.

SUA connects scientific advances with agricultural practice and food-sector innovation, while supporting students through university catering services and food-related educational activities.

Research and Innovation

SUA conducts research on sustainable crop and livestock production, food quality and safety, nutrition, biotechnology, agroecology and efficient use of natural resources. Its laboratories, research facilities and demonstration sites support the development and testing of practical solutions for the agrifood sector.

The Food Incubator helps translate research into food products and processes, including work on novel ingredients, processing techniques and product quality. European research collaboration further strengthens the university's contribution to sustainable food systems and resilient agricultural production.

Projects and research partnerships with farmers, producers and companies encourage innovation that responds to changing environmental conditions and market needs.

Education and Student Engagement

Study programmes provide specialist knowledge in agronomy, animal production, food sciences, nutrition, biotechnology and related fields. Learning combines lectures with laboratory work, field training, practical demonstrations and cooperation with enterprises.

Students also participate in events addressing sustainable food production, responsible consumption and food innovation. University catering facilities offer meat-free and vegetarian options, creating opportunities for more diverse food choices within everyday student life.

The university's educational programmes contribute to the development of a qualified workforce able to improve food systems and agricultural sustainability.

Public Engagement and Community Activities

Knowledge transfer to farmers, food businesses and the wider community is a major part of SUA's contribution. In 2025, the university participated in National Field Days in Selice, presenting agricultural innovation and sustainable production approaches to practitioners and the public.

Researchers and specialists also engage with schools, professional audiences and food-sector stakeholders through workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions and consultations. The Food Incubator and AgroBioTech Research Centre help connect scientific results with practical applications, including product development and new processing methods.

Sustainable Campus Operations

SUA operates student catering services and supports affordable access to meals within the university community. Institutional information for 2025 identifies a EUR 2.40 student meal subsidy and the availability of vegetarian dishes in university catering facilities.

Campus waste-management records identify food waste as a separate category, enabling monitoring and opportunities for prevention. In 2025, the recorded food-waste quantity was approximately 7 tonnes, compared with 8.5 tonnes in 2024. Food-service and operational measures provide a basis for promoting more responsible consumption.
