Téma: Effect of polychlorinated biphenyls and their hydroxylated metabolites on the synthesis and metabolism of iodothyronines in the chicken thyroid gland and livers. Despite the legal regulations on the production and use of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), these compounds, due to their long half-life, are still present in the environment, posing a real threat to human and animal organisms. PCBs and their hydroxylated metabolites (OH-PCBs) belong to the group called ‘endocrine disruptors’ (EDs). Due to their similar chemical structure, PCB and OH-PCB may mimic or interfere with the action of the endogenous hormones like thyroid hormones, so these compounds may disturb the functions of the endocrine system.
